Flower beds and fresh mulch in Tyler, TX: cleared, edged, mulched and replanted

Overgrown beds cut back to soil, edged along the brick, covered in fresh mulch and planted with roses and shrubs where you want them.

Chapter 01

A brick-edged bed that stopped being a bed

Most beds in Tyler do not fail all at once. The shrubs grow past the brick, saplings seed themselves into the corners, and the mulch washes thin and fades from red-brown to grey. By the time the weeds are coming through, the bed reads as a patch of brush rather than the border it was built to be.

Polo's own photos show exactly that starting point: a curved brick bed swallowed by shrubs and volunteer saplings, with a chainsaw laid out on the lawn. The edging is still there under it all. It just cannot be seen.

Cut back, clear to soil, edge, mulch, plant

The woody growth goes first. The chainsaw takes the saplings and the overgrown shrubs, hand tools take the roots and weeds, and the debris rides out on the pickup and utility trailer. The bed is cleared down to bare soil so there is something to start from, and anything worth keeping, like a birdbath or a statue, stays where it was.

Then the line gets recut against the brick so the lawn stops creeping in, fresh red-brown mulch goes down over the whole bed, and new plants go in where you want them. The finished bed at the top of this page is that sequence: a curved brick edge, roses and shrubs, and mulch that makes the green stand out.

Chapter 03

Keeping a bed looking planted

Mulch does not last forever in Texas weather. When the color fades toward grey and bare soil starts showing between plants, the bed is due for a top-up. Keeping the brick line trimmed with the string trimmer and pulling weeds while they are small stretches that out considerably.

A fall clean-up pulls leaves out of the beds before winter, and regular trimming keeps shrubs off the brick. Polo usually comes out to look at a bed before he quotes it, so call or text (903) 245-6122 and he will tell you if yours needs a top-up or a full reset.

Same bed, same house

From brush to bare soil

This is the job that comes before the mulch. Until the bed is cleared there is nothing to edge and nothing to plant, so the crew starts with the saw. Once it looks like the photo marked After, the bed is ready for the new mulch and plants.

More on what happens to the leaves and limbs on the fall clean-up page.
